About
Shanghai
The largest city in China and one of the five super cities of the world,
Shanghai is a coastal opening city as well as a famous historic and cultural
one, laying in the middle of China's mainland coastline and Yangtze River's
entrance to the sea - it's also one of ten world's largest seaports and an
important hub of communications.
Shanghai is endowed with favorable geographical and natural conditions, and a
long history of development. It has a well-developed commodity economy and
comparatively high scientific and technological level with an easy access to the
outside world by all means of transport.
Today Shanghai continues to grow with new underground stations, highways,
crisscrossing the city, the most modern stock exchange in the world, a swish new
airport, two giant brides and a whole new city in Pudong. Perhaps no city
in the world is as futuristic, and Shanghai is the very symbol of China's rise
to economic powerhouse status.

Food
Chinese cuisine is famous all over the world for its rich flavour and
delightful colorings. Because of the different local climate, history and
eating customs in each area, local dishes developed their own characteristics so
special cuisine and local snacks were gradually formed.
Shanghai boasts one of China's best and most distinctive cuisines.
The region abounds in the selection of freshwater fish and shellfish,
influenced by its position just south of the Yangste and at the mouth of the
Huangpu. Dishes from this area are lightly and delicately seasoned.
Shanghai's people have a sweet taste and more sugar is used in Shanghai than
the rest of China. Its neighbors also contribute to the diversity of the
area's cuisine: Hangzhou, known for its West Lake carp; Zhenjiang to the west,
for its vinegar; and Shaoxing, for its warmed rice wine.
